Getting Hired as a Graphic Designer is not as simple as sending out your design portfolio or resume. It also doesn’t matter if you have a degree from a good design school.
Getting Hired as a Graphic Designer means having “Employer Empathy”. How does your work help the company achieve their goals? How do you communicate the value of your work and present yourself? Does your personality fit with the corporate culture? How do you prove that you’re a good investment, and who has bet on you in the past and what was the outcome?
Too many of you are worried about being a “good designer” or an award winning designer, or what the other designers think of you… You want to be the next David Airey or Aaron Draplin…
In terms of practicality, and getting a Graphic Design Job and having a good Career as a Graphic Designer, you need to be able to demonstrate in clear terms the monetary value of you work…
Like how in Shark Tank it always comes down to “What were your sales…?” Well for Designers, you’re only as good as your last execution… if you want XYZ salary, you have to demonstrate that someone else is willing to value your work accordingly…
Research your potential employers, and map your portfolio to showing that you can do the work they are selling their clients. Instead of leveraging your GPA and your Pedigree from a University, which you may or may not have… how about showing off your client sheet or referrals instead?
Don’t you think someone writing you a check is more interested in someone who paid for your design work and how it effected their business than what a professor thinks?
