Graphic Design as profession seems to have been getting a certain lack of respect and is being devalued. While this isn’t a new problem, and the general public still doesn’t grasp what we actually do beyond using Photoshop to make pretty images…

Sites like Fiverr, Design Contest and Crowd Sourcing have undermined and undervalued the profession and created bad habits and low expectations among both designers and clients.

It is literally the Creative Services equivalent of a Fast Food Epidemic. Eating fast food has some vary obvious negative repercussions, the fall out from not approaching design and marketing the correct way is less obvious to some businesses and startups. Even some new designers don’t understand this, since they entered this career with this being normal and accepted.

But designers have been getting clients, and companies and individuals have been getting services long before these CrowdSource Design Sites and Cheap Sites like Fiverr ever came along. People had to not be lazy and build actual relationships, do their research and take risk and learn from their mistakes.

The lack of willingness to do so is not only lazy, it’s dangerous to Graphic Design, Marketing, Creative and to Business.

If your face had an issue you needed corrected, would you go to a bargain plastic surgeon? Do you go to the free clinic if you can afford a better option? The marketing of your company, and your public image deserve the same care and respect.

If you aren’t planning to live on Fast Food, don’t let your business live on manufactured, mass produced, “fast food style design and creative”. Invest in quality, because it will pay off. Build a relationship that you will value and that will provide you with the best results possible. A bargain isn’t worth the cost of getting it wrong when it comes to marketing in a noisy world.

Now, honestly Designers are partly to blame. Not educating clients, not demonstrating or explaining the process, not qualifying their prices, not following AIGA guidelines and ethics are all part of the problem. By demonstrating my value as much as possible and educating my clients I avoid many of these problems.
